Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer and Encarna Sanchez, hairdresser. She was a compulsive performer when she was a kid and even reenacted commercials on TV to amuse the family. However, she chose to concentrate on dance. After nine years of ballet instruction at Spain's National Conservatory she was able to continue her studies under the supervision of a variety of prominent dancers. It all changed in 1998 when her movie industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) won her the award for the Best Actress Goya. Cruz made several more trips to films in English, but All About My Mother (1999) was her first big international hit. She played a unchaste however well-meaning nun. Cruz discovered herself very popular on both sides of the Atlantic due to her film winning numerous awards and praises.
