In the 2010s, Robertson switched from acting to screenwriting. In the year 2015, Robertson completed the Writers Guild's Showrunners Training Program, where she was taught by the former WGA West president John Wells. The novel was adapted by Robertson The Possibilities in 2017, Kaui Hart Hemmings’ follow-up novel The Descendents. It is about a grieving Colorado mother whose son was killed in an avalanche that hit a ski slope. The mother is then able to form an alliance with a mysterious young girl. She has written a feature drama inspired by Chris Cleave's novel, Little Bee starring Julia Roberts. In the year 2016, she began creating Swimming With Sharks, a series inspired by the 1994 Hollywood satire film. Quibi will debut the series in 2020. Star was also her comedy-drama pilot, Your Time Is Up For Lifetime. Christina Applegate was also a part of the project. From 1997 until 1999, Robertson was with Gregg Araki, an independent filmmaker. Robertson has been married to producer Chris Cowles since 2004. She gave birth to her first child, a son named William Robert Cowles, on July 9, 2008, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. In October 2016, Robertson gave birth to her second son, Bennett.
