Ann-Margret

Ann-Margret Olsson was born in Stockholm, Sweden, the daughter of Anna Regina (nee Aronsson) and Carl Gustav Olsson, a native of Ornskoldsvik. The family relocated to Valsjobyn, Jamtland. Later she spoke of Valsjobyn as a small village of "lumberjacks" and farmers that was located just over the Arctic Circle. Ann-Margret's mother and mother-in-law joined her father in the United States in November 1946, and her father took her to Radio City Music Hall on the day they arrived. They were settled in Wilmette, Illinois, outside of Chicago. In 1949, she became an naturalized American citizen. Ann-Margret began her dancing lessons at Marjorie Young School of Dance. She was an unnatural talent right from the beginning and could easily follow the steps. Her parents were supportive and her mother made all her costumes. In order to help the family, her mother was a receptionist for a funeral parlor after her husband suffered a severe injury on his job. Ann-Margret was just a teenager, and was a guest on Don McNeill's Breakfast Club, Morris B. Sachs Amateur Hour and Ted Mack's Amateur Hour. She attended New Trier High School located in Winnetka, Illinois and continued her acting career. In 1959, she entered Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She was a member the sorority Kappa Alpha Theta. She did not graduate. She was part of the Suttletones group, and was a performer at the Mist in Chicago. Following the show, she traveled to Las Vegas to meet up with a club date. They traveled to Los Angeles, California, and through the agent Georgia Lund, they secured club dates in Newport Beach, California and Reno, Nevada. The group also visited the Dunes in Las Vegas where they were also joined by Tony Bennett and Al Hirt. George Burns saw her performance and asked her to audition for his holiday show. Burns and Burns performed an impromptu soft-shoe show. Variety declared that "George Burns has a gold mine in Ann-Margret ... she has a distinct style that is her own that could easily lead her to the top of the list"
